      FIRST EPA COMMITTEE UNDER UK-EASTERN AND SOUTHERN AFRICA ESA) ECONOMIC PARTNERSHIP AGREEMENT

      The first United Kingdom (UK) - Eastern and Southern Africa (ESA) Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) Committee was held virtually on 07 May 2021.  The meeting was attended by representatives from the UK and ESA namely Madagascar, Mauritius, Seychelles and Zimbabwe.

      The meeting was co-chaired by Mr Brendan McMullan, Head of Trade Agreement Department, UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and Mr Narainduth Boodhoo, Director, International Trade Division from Mauritius.

      The meeting adopted its rules of procedure. The possibility of financial and technical support to the ESA states in the implementation of the Agreement was raised. Mauritius accentuated on the need for targeted assistance to enhance exports.   Both sides would also explore the possibility of improving the current rules of origin.   The meeting took note that the automatic tuna derogation of 6300 tonnes of canned tuna and 341 tonnes of tuna loins will be shared equally between Mauritius and Seychelles, pending the signing of the UK-ESA EPA by Madagascar. The Parties also agreed to identify priority areas for future negotiations on a comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement.
