      Press Communiqué Economic Partnership Agreement

      The 4th round of negotiations between the European Union (EU) and the Eastern and Southern African countries (ESA) on the deepening of the Interim Economic Partnership Agreement (IEPA) was held from 13th to 16th April 2021.

      These negotiations cover 13 different areas, including trade in services and investment, Rules of Origin, Economic Cooperation and Development, Trade and Sustainable Development (TSD), customs cooperation and trade facilitation, sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS).

      During the current round, negotiations on customs cooperation were concluded, while commendable progress was made on SPS, Rules of Origin and TSD. The parties also identified areas of possible agreement on trade in services and further agreed that the EU would financially contribute in the implementation of the commitments to be taken by the ESA in line with their development priorities.

      A first meeting of senior officials was also held on 16th April 2021. They took note of the progress made so far in the talks. The ESA senior officials emphasized the need for asymmetry in terms of commitments to be taken by the ESA and pledged for adequate support from the EU.

      The next round has been tentatively fixed for July.
